I have a lot of debts from years ago that I am now in a position to start tackling properly and I wondered what was the best way to do it.

I was thinking of paying larger amounts on the smaller debts (whilst paying token amounts to the other's) so I can start wiping them out. Is that a good way to manage it?

Also, I have some very small debts on my credit record that are still recorded as defaults but I haven't heard from the lenders for many years. Should I contact them to pay them off or just ignore them seeing as it will be 6 years since the default date next year?

Answer:The statute of limitations have likely expired on the old debts. Making payments (or acknowledging the debt period) on these will reset the statute and could actually cause you more problems (small claims court). Start with the most recent debt and work your way backwards.

Student loans/government loans… The have no SOL, can't be discharged in bankruptcy and you will have to pay them back. These should be a top priority.

If paying off collection accounts… A paid collection is still a collection. You need to try to obtain a pay for delete contract in writing before paying.

Charge offs… Look up the SOL in your state. Pay the ones that are still legally collectible first. Then work backwards.

Bring all open accounts current first… You need to keep all open accounts current. Your strategy is a good one. Dave Ramsey's complete money makeover outlines this. He calls it snowballing payments. Wipe out the smallest, apply that money to the next lowest until gone, apply both payments to the next… I have tried it and it works well. Wiped out my debt. Some people will advise you to pay off the high interest lines first. This will save you money over time but if your goal is to free up cash to wipe out debt, stick with the snowballing strategy.

Answer:Write down what your paying out …utilities, loans, entertainment..etc.etc. Then look at what your wasting your money on……..cut out the waste then apply that to your debt you will see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I have a test for a job coming up and they require you to work out gross profit and percentages without using a calculator.. I have always used a calculator for things like this. Please please can some one help and give me some tips to do this. I really want this job and this is the final part, and if I fail this I don't get the job.

I would be so so grateful.

Answer:Profit = Revenue – Costs

To calculate other figures as a percentage of gross profit, divide that figure by gross profit. My guess is that since they don't want you to use a calculator, the calculations won't be too complex. Example:

Gross Profit = 1,000,000

Cost of Goods Sold = 100,000

COGS as a % of Gross Profit = 100,000/1,000,000 = 0.10 or 10%

An easy way to visualize any percentage calculation and solve it manually is to set it up like

x%/100 = [figure]/[whole]

In the example above, it would be

          x%/100 = COGS/Gross Profit

          x%/100 = 100,000/1,000,000

1,000,000(x%) = 100,000(100)

1,000,000(x%) = 10,000,000

                x% = 10,000,000/1,000,000

                x% = 10%

Good luck! If this wasn't what you were looking for, let us know and provide some more details.

Answer:calculate difference as under

opening stock xxx Sales xxxx

  Purchases xxx Closing Sotck xxxx

Direct expenses xxx __________

= gross profit XX xxxxxxxxxxx

                          _____ ____________

Gross Profit/Sales X 100 = Gross profit in %

Answer:paper and pencil like they did before there were calculators and computers

I could do that type of math when I was in grade school

I currently have a job through an agency so as such they pay me. However, in the next month or so I shall need to leave as I will be starting university, this is a temporary job. I know people are in a similar situation or will just generally be leaving to pursue other interests. I have overheard then saying about how they get money back once they leave the agency, what would this mean, and would I somehow be entitled to getting some money back once I leave?

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Answer:You need to give notice that you're leaving. If you just walk out you might not get all your pay, and you'd lose the chance of a reference for your next job. I'm guessing that for temp work your notice period is two weeks… could be anything though so find out asap.

Kaylee is right about the tax rebate and holiday pay. You might have to claim your tax back from the government, but holiday pay should be automatic.

Answer:you will be paid any holiday left over you have and when it comes to new tax year you will recieve back a tax rebate if u have paid too much for amount of time you have worked.

Print some CVs (google "skills-based CV" for lots of advice on writing one), sort out two character references (teachers, or voluntary work organisers if you do any) then go round and ask. Good luck!

i want to change my job and become a brickie ive wanted to do it for years i even paid to go on a course for a week to get some basic skills. the problem is how do i get a job in it?? plus i need to earn a mininium of what i earn now as i couldnt afford to have a drop in wages. HELP what do i need to do

Answer:Not the best idea in the UK at the moment as house building has virtually stopped. Remember we are in a recession.

Answer:you would probably have to find an apprenticeship and start at the bottom – you are not going to make top wage as a beginner – apprentices start at about 50% of teh 'Journeyman" rate and their pay increases in steps oover 3-5 yrs – occasional classwork and level tests are usually also included

a one week course is useless – you may have to go to a trade school in order for anyone to even hire you as an apprentice

Answer:Look at Business Link http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/bdotg/act… and always remember that the government provide free literature on all aspects of business. Don't part with a penny for advice on anything business related until you are up and running and in need of specialist advice. Business Link are a great source of knowledge for beginners and experienced business owners. They usually have the answer whatever I ask but on the rare occasions I have stumped them. they have always known where to point me.

Answer:Keeping it simple..

Firstly look for commercial shops, think about where you want to be, where are people doing the same business for you. I know specific areas that i'd buy a bar, or nail shop for example. Keep to the towns you KNOW, don't try on your first venture opening somewhere you don't know.

Check out rents of places, view them. Figure realistically if you would afford it. If you don't have a business plan, try writing one. Barclays have some great free online software. You may think you know your business already, but a plan will help you iron out the wrinkles even if you never show it to anyone else.

Do have a look at business link, they are great for marketing, legal advice for free etc and offer free seminars. They also can tell you of any grants available in your area.

And yes, do be reallllly careful of people trying to sell you ANYTHING – advertising, fire saftey etc. Business link will advise on legal requirements.

Best of luck.

Answer:Whatever you do… Lots of different 'organisations' will get in contact with you (for example) like utility consultants, fire and safety etc etc.. they will all claim to be able to save you money.. The fire and safety is logical and needed for insurance on a premises but stay with whatever gas and electric provider are already supplying the shop.. Sounds like common sense but when it's your own shop and someone promises to save you cash you might be tempted.. I had a terrible experience with this and I would never want anyone to ever go through the same. Good luck.

last year i was in hospital six days and signed off for a month but every week my hr and boss phoned to say they wanted to see me. I felt obliged to let them and to be honest was too weak to think about it. I have had two months off with depression in November December and went back to work Jan this year but whilst i was off the same thing happened. Since then i have been seeing a councilor every week and make up the time i have to loose from work because of it. Then today, the first time for a long time, I had an episode which meant i couldn't go to work, i phoned my line manager and told him i would call back after speaking to the doctor. Then i got a phone call from my head of hr asking if she and my boss could come see me. I had explained what was wrong to my line manager and feel this is now becoming harassment. They say its so we don't have to talk at work but in the past they have called me to the boardroom and all three have sat opposite me interrogating me, even though i have had notes for all absences. I even gave them a doctors report which basically told them i know if it is safe for me to go to work or not , and my GP said they do not need to be told any more than legally required. Even my councilor thinks they are behaving in appropriately but i don't know how i stand legally.

Answer:Legally you are under no obligation, unless exceptionally your employer has a policy that says you will permit it while you are getting sick pay. A home visit is good practice if it is handled well. It shows that you matter, and employees often are more 'themselves' at home, plus you don't get quizzed by workmates. If you feel pressurised, just say so firmly but politely. Avoid saying "harassment" as that's a very serious allegation and might get their backs up.

Worth trying to express what you would like to happen, as at some point (depending on your service, type of work, employer's size and many other factors) they may have to consider terminating your employment. The longer you can retain sympathy and support the longer you get sick pay and keep your job open.

Answer:LOSE!!!!!! loose is a different word!

What's the harm in letting them in?

My Ex husband went bankrupt without telling me nine months ago. Im trying to sort our joint debt but one of the creditors on my credit report is saying the account has defaulted but it is also satisfied. Its the only one saying this as the other two have defaulted and current balances showing. Since I am trying to get in touch with my creditors that I owe money too I would like to know if this means the account has been written off as a bad debt or do I still owe them money. If I do I will have to contact them to find out, Oh im in the UK incase that helps.

Answer:If you contact a creditor you are admitting liability for the loan. This means you will still be liable or they will be able to chase you for the next 6 years. If you have not made any payments towards they debt for some time, you will have eaten into that time and may yet escape.

If your husband has indeed gone bankrupt it may be that the company views its' chance of recovering anything too slim to warrant further legal action. In this case they would write the debt off but may still sell it to a debt recovery agency. In this case you might find yourself being chased by total strangers. My suggestion to you would be keep a note of what is happening, consider carefully paying people who chase you but don't contact anyone who has not contacted you.

Hi, I have been offered an interview for possible promotion at work and was wondering whether anyone can give me any tips? I have had the interview once before and failed and the reason they gave was that I went into the interview as a shop floor worker not a manager. One question for example was "If I was to come to work and said I didn't want to do that particular job, what would you do?". This is the type of question they will probably ask at my next interview so any professional tips please.

Thanks

Answer:If you are asked to do a particular job at work and it is part of your duty then you just do it without complaining – If i had complained in the past about not wanting to do a particular job that i was employed to do I would have been fired as there is plenty out there that will do that job? As for your question I would tell them that you enjoy working for the company and there is not particular job that you would not do? (lying will get you the promotion) Good Luck

Answer:You would have to do all aspects of work even though you don't like it as it is a part of the job description criteria.

For example I have to do paperwork, I don't like it, but it is a formality and part of my job requires me to keep records, so tough for me I have to do it.

This thought happens in all aspects of jobs. My husband is a manager and was asked to choose 4 people in his company to "LET GO" to cut costs right before Christmas! How bad did he feel? Having to choose, who do you choose? Everyone has children? Its the worst ever thing he had to do, he couldn't sleep for days/weeks and felt really guilty a long time after, but its in his job description!

Answer:at the end of interviews they usually ask "any questions?"if you do have any before the interview write them down and when they ask pull the paper out. that will really impress them
