Do they have to pay tax to UK govt?

Hi,

I am a british citizen.but my parents are indian citizens who visit me here in UK for a period 6 months and go back to india and will come back to UK after 3 months.Infact they spend more days in UK than in India. They have no right to work or benefits in UK.But they have property and income in India.

Now the question is do they have to pay any tax to UK government?.Few of my friends said if any overseas citizen live more than 180 days in an year they have to pay tax to UK government for their overseas income.is it right ?pls advice me.

Answer:They will be considered resident if they spend more than 180 days in a year in the UK but not domiciled because their permanent home is in India. That means that they will only be liable for British tax on any British income they might have or foreign income they bring into (remit to) the UK to live on.

They will not have to pay British taxes on their world wide income. If they bring in capital (could be income from a prior year), they will not have to pay tax on it.

After six years of doing this they will need to pay £30,000 a year to preserve their non-dom status.

Answer:That's a question of residency for tax purposes.

The 180 day is one criteria – there is several other criteria.
